1. Keep
Keep what you use, love, or cannot imagine living without. Photos, heirlooms, and a few favorite pieces often matter more than a whole houseful.
2. Give to family
Ask before you assume. Some family members want items you would not expect, and some want nothing. Photograph and label things, and set a date for a family walk-through.
3. Sell
Furniture, antiques, art, jewelry, collectibles, tools, and equipment can bring real money. A living estate sale or hybrid estate sale lets you sell without hauling everything out of the home.
4. Donate
Gently used household items, clothing, and books can go to local charities. Call ahead, because many have limits on what they accept.
5. Discard
Broken, worn-out, or unsafe items go in the trash or recycling. Hazardous materials need proper disposal.
| Item type | Usually best |
|---|---|
| Furniture in good shape | Sell or give to family |
| Antiques, art, jewelry | Have it looked at, then sell |
| Everyday clothing and linens | Donate |
| Tools and outdoor equipment | Sell |
| Photos and papers | Keep or scan |
| Broken or unsafe items | Discard |
